features needed for that model. Unfortunately, the navigation software may not detect or warn you that the version is outdated, and it may even

appear to operate normally.

NOTE:

Replacing a DVD just because the version number is higher is not always justified. A higher software version does not necessarily mean it

contains newer software for your model. The DVD contains software for all models that use the same color DVD, and a revised number may or

may not have software fixes or upgrades for the model in question.

Typical warning symptoms that an outdated DVD is being used include:

^ An Acura model navigation screen may display a Honda logo while booting up.

^ A newly introduced model feature (for example, XM radio or HFL) may not display properly, and Extension may display instead.

NOTE:

Extension may be displayed when using Music Link, but should never be displayed when XM or USB is selected.

^ The current street being driven on may not appear properly at the bottom of the map screen display when the vehicle is driven on a main road.

NOTE:

If necessary, compare the navigation system operation to a same model vehicle with a current DVD.

HOW TO IDENTIFY NAVIGATION DVD OR COMPASS CD VERSIONS

To determine the navigation or compass version on a particular model, start the engine, then locate the navigation or compass control unit (see the

appropriate service manual). Open the DVD door, and push the eject button to eject the disc. Hold the disc by the edges, and check for these items:

^ The label color (see the chart on the previous pages for model application).

^ Read the DVD or CD version listed on the bottom of the label, and note it on the repair order. You will need this version number in these

instances:

- To verify that the DVD or CD version is appropriate for the vehicle

- Any time you call Tech Line regarding a navigation or compass system issue

- To answer client inquiries concerning update or coverage issues

NOTE:

Clients may obtain DVDs from sources outside the normal ordering process. If you determine this is the case, recommend that your client

purchase the appropriate DVD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center (see ORDERING A REPLACEMENT DVD, UPDATE DVD, or

COMPASS CD).

Software Patches

Occasionally, problems are discovered after a software version is released, either with the original software version that came with the vehicle, or a

yearly update DVD purchased by the client. Many software related problems can be repaired with software updates (patch CD).

Before assuming a navigation problem is hardware related, check the iN for software updates, and see if your client's problem is resolved with a

patch CD.

CHECKING A DISC (DVD OR CD) FOR DAMAGE

Check the underside of the disc for signs of mishandling. Deep scratches, swirl marks, or fingerprints can cause random lock-ups, reboots, and DVD

read or format errors.

NOTE:

A damaged DVD or CD is not covered under warranty unless the disc is damaged by the navigation or compass unit. Damage by the navigation

or compass unit typically appears as circular scratches caused by something rubbing against the disc as it spins. The damage may appear as arcs

or complete circles on the disc reading surface. For more information, refer to Service Bulletin 08-035, DVD Head Error; or No Route

Displayed, and Navigation DVD is Scratched.

^ Verify that the underside of the disc is silver, and not a copy with a bluish color. Copies do not work properly and can cause other symptoms that

mimic hardware problems.

^ If the disc is dirty, go to DISC (DVD AND CD) HANDLING AND CLEANING.

^ If the DVD is defective, or has any of the issues mentioned above that are not covered by a service bulletin, return the vehicle to your client and

recommend that they order the proper DVD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center (see ORDERING A REPLACEMENT DVD, UPDATE

DVD, OR COMPASS CD).

NOTE:

If the navigation or compass unit is found to be defective (through the appropriate service manual troubleshooting procedures) and the disc will

not eject, order a replacement control unit, and also order a DVD or CD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center. (New control units do not come

with a navigation DVD or compass CD.)

ORDERING A REPLACEMENT DVD, UPDATE DVD, OR COMPASS CD

To order a navigation DVD, you can call the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center. The Fulfillment Center knows the correct color DVD application for

each vehicle and can provide the latest version. To order online, go to the website and use the dropdown menu under Find Updates. The client's

navigation manual provides additional ordering and installation information. This information is located in the Client Assistance section.

To order a compass CD, you cannot use the online website. Call the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center, select option 3 for dealerships, then select option

2 for map patches and specify you are ordering a compass CD for the RL.

NAVIGATION DVD OR COMPASS CD STOCKING CONCERNS

Never stock navigation system DVDs, because software versions are constantly updated. Some dealerships also remove the DVDs from new or used

vehicles, store them in a common, locked location, then reinstall them when the vehicle is sold. This is a mistake because the various navigation

systems are version sensitive (meaning that even if the correct color DVD is used, an older version may not work).

The same issues apply to compass CDs, as on the surface, they appear similar to navigation DVDs. Since compass-equipped vehicles appear similar

to navigation-equipped vehicles, this increases the chances of the wrong disc being inserted.

Stocking navigation DVDs or compass CDs or storing navigation DVDs and compass CDs in a common location can result in any of these

problems:

^ Incorrectly colored DVDs or compass CDs being put into navigation vehicles. This causes the system to display error messages, or it causes

system malfunctions that mimic a hardware problem. This results in the client driving away with a malfunctioning navigation system.

^ The DVD version is out-of-date or incompatible with a particular model. This inconveniences your client by delaying the repair, or by causing

additional (and unnecessary) returns to your dealership.

^ A navigation DVD being put into a compass vehicle causes the system to display DISC ERROR messages.

^ The client experiences software bugs or other issues that have already been resolved in later versions currently available at the fulfillment center.

These ordering procedures are recommended:

^ Always order navigation DVDs on an as-needed basis. During a typical model year, each color DVD may undergo a half-dozen "software only"

version upgrades to fix minor issues on some or all models the DVD supports. This is normal. Usually, only the letter at the end of the version

number changes, while the database (maps and POIs) remain unchanged through the year.

^ Never promise your clients future free updates. There are no free programs for updating navigation DVDs. Update DVDs are generally available

for purchase each fall. The online DVD order site provides information when an update for a particular color DVD is available.

^ Compass CDs are seldom updated. Order a compass CD only if it is damaged and needs replacement.

NOTE:

^ Refer to the version chart in this service bulletin when ordering any navigation system DVD.

^ Damaged discs are not warrantable unless they are damaged by the navigation unit.

DISC (DVD AND CD) HANDLING AND CLEANING

To avoid damaging or leaving fingerprints on the disc, always handle it by the edges and place it in a jewel case whenever it is outside the control

unit. Deep scratches or fingerprints on the back of the disc can cause intermittent rebooting or other system errors.

Smudges and fingerprints can be carefully removed using a mild cleaner and soft cloth designed to clean eyeglasses. To clean a disc, first apply the

cleaning solution to the disc, and using a clean soft cloth, very gently wipe across the disc from the center to the outside edge, never in a circular

motion.

Do not place stabilizer rings or labels on the disc.

INSTALLING A NAVIGATION DVD OR COMPASS CD

NOTE:

For compass systems, the procedure is the same except there is no disclaimer screen, and you do not need to map-match the vehicle.

1. Park the vehicle outside, and start the engine.

2. Eject the old DVD.

3. Install the new navigation DVD. Be sure to close the door on the navigation unit.

4. Select OK on the disclaimer screen, then turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). Wait 1 minute, then restart the engine.

5. Select OK on the disclaimer screen.

6. Drive the vehicle on a mapped road until the road name appears at the bottom of the map screen. The system is now map-matched.

PRECAUTION ON CLIENT "SNEAK PREVIEWS" OF A NEWER NAVIGATION DVD VERSION

Your client might request a look (or "sneak preview") at features in the latest navigation software. You should never preview a navigation DVD in a

client's vehicle. Inserting a new DVD installs the latest software from the DVD into the memory of the client's navigation system. When the original

DVD is reinstalled, the newer software remains in memory and is often incompatible with the client's original DVD Map and P01 database.

If your client wishes to see the latest navigation coverage or software features, demonstrate it on an in-stock vehicle that already has the latest DVD

version.

If a newer version is loaded accidentally, either by the dealer or the client, one possible remedy is to enter the navigation diagnostic mode's Version

screen and do a forced download. Refer to the iN for applicable patches that may need reinstalling.

If a forced download does not reinstall the original software, the navigation unit may need to be replaced. This is not covered under warranty.

NOTE:

A forced download is not possible when the client upgrades their 2005 white-labeled DVD version 4.13 with an '06 or later DVD version 4.31 or

greater. Either a new version DVD must be purchased, or the navigation unit must be replaced.

PITFALLS WHEN INTERCHANGING NAVIGATION DVD/PARTS DURING DIAGNOSIS

When troubleshooting navigation system problems, ensure that the known-good vehicle is the same software version year and model as the vehicle

being serviced. Mixing incompatible navigation DVDs or other system components can delay the troubleshooting process by causing side effects

unrelated to the original problem. See the table under DVD NAVIGATION TYPE IDENTIFICATION BY MODEL.

REPLACING THE NAVIGATION UNIT AND TRANSFERRING THE NAVIGATION DVD

If your diagnosis determines the client's navigation unit is faulty, you will need to order a remanufactured replacement navigation unit (in warranty),

or send it out for repair (out of warranty). Refer to Service Bulletin 06-001, Audio, Navigation, and RES Unit In-Warranty Exchange, and Audio and

DVD Player Out-of-Warranty Repair). The order procedure on the iN is designed to minimize unnecessary replacement of parts due to client

settings, unfamiliarity with system operation, or software/database issues that cannot be resolved by hardware replacement. The Navigation System

Worksheet asks the following navigation information:

^ The client's DVD color and version number on the label, and condition of the DVD (inspection for scratches).

^ The client's complaint, symptom, and other details to allow duplication of the issue by the factory.

^ The results of the diagnostic procedure from the service manual.

This information helps the Remanufacture Center and the factory to understand the problem and properly repair the core.

NOTE:

The parts are not available through the Remanufactured Parts Center:

Replacement navigation units do not come with a DVD because the parts center has no way of knowing the client's current DVD version. When the

new navigation unit arrives, and before disconnecting the original navigation unit, do this:

1. Save the client's data (if equipped) using the Save Users Memory procedure:

^ Refer to the applicable service manual, or

^ Online, enter keywords NAVI DIAG, select Navigation System Diagnostic Mode from the list, and look for Save Users Memory.

2. With the engine running, open the navigation unit door, and eject the DVD from the original unit. To avoid scratching or damaging the DVD,

temporarily place the DVD in a jewel case.

NOTE:

If the DVD will not eject, write that information clearly on the core return form, and order a DVD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center.

3. Install a new navigation unit:

^ Refer to the navigation section in the applicable service manual, or

^ Online, enter keywords NAVI REMOVAL, and select Navigation Unit Removal/Installation from the list.

4. Reinstall the client's original DVD, verifying that the DVD is free of deep scratches or smudges.

5. Check online for any service bulletins prescribing patches that should be applied to the replacement navigation unit.

HDD VERSION IDENTIFICATION BY MODEL

For navigation Systems that use the first-generation HDD/flash memory card (1996-99 3.5RL, 1999 3.21L), transfer the HDD or flash memory card

to the replacement navigation unit:

^ 1996-99 3.5RL models: If you are replacing the navigation unit, make sure you transfer the HDD or the flash memory card from the original unit

to the replacement unit.

^ 1999 3.2TL models: The original HDD navigation unit is no longer available. You can either try to send it to Alpine for repair (see Service

Bulletin 06-001, Audio, Navigation, and RES Unit In-Warranty Exchange and Out-of-Warranty Repair), or replace it with the 2000 IL DVD

navigation unit. Make sure you also order a black label DVD since the DVD does not come with the new navigation unit.

For navigation systems that use an HDD, check the software version and compare the version to the chart.

HOW TO IDENTIFY HDD SOFTWARE VERSIONS

To determine the navigation software version in a vehicle:

^ Make sure you are on the map screen, then press INFO.

^ Push the interface dial to the right to select OTHER.

^ Rotate the interface dial to highlight System/Device Information, then press the ENTER button.

^ The following information appears:

- Software version

- Database version

- Device number

^ To exit, press the MAP/GUIDE button.

Software Patches

map update purchased by the client. Many software related problems can be repaired with software updates (patch CD).

First Generation HDD

If your diagnosis determines the client's navigation unit is faulty, you will need to order a new part or send it out for repair. Refer to Service Bulletin

06-001, Audio, Navigation, and RES Unit In-Warranty Exchange and Out-of-Warranty Repair). The order procedure on the iN is designed to

minimize unnecessary replacement of parts due to client settings, unfamiliarity with system operation, or software/database issues that cannot be

resolved by hardware replacement. The Navigation System Worksheet asks the following navigation information:

^ The client's complaint, symptom, and other details to allow duplication of the issue by the factory.

^ The results of the diagnostic procedure from the service manual.

This information helps the factory to understand the problem and properly repair the core.

NOTE:

The following parts are not available through the Remanufactured Parts Center:

1. Remove the original navigation unit. Either order a new navigation unit or send the unit out for repair. Refer to S/B 06-001 for more information

^ Refer to the applicable service manual, or

^ Online, enter keywords NAVI DIAG, select

Navigation System Diagnostic Mode from the list, and look for Save Users Memory.

2. Install a new navigation unit:

^ Refer to the navigation section in the applicable service manual, or

^ Online, enter keywords NAVI REMOVAL, and select Navigation Unit Removal/Installation from the list.

3. Check online for any service bulletins prescribing patches that should be applied to the replacement navigation unit.

4. Park the vehicle outside, and do the system initialization. Online, look up the navigation system TQI service bulletin that applies to the client's

vehicle. This assures that all components connected to, or controlled by, the navigation unit are working properly. The TQI procedure includes a

short test to ensure that the navigation unit has synchronized its maps with the current location obtained during the GPS initialization

(map-matching).

Second Generation HDD

The audio-navigation unit and HDD are only available as separate parts. There is a built in anti-theft protection referred to as "mating" to limit

replacing an HDD or audio-navigation unit. Refer to Audio- Navigation Unit and HDD Service Precautions in General Troubleshooting of the

applicable service manual for more information.

If you substitute an audio-navigation unit for troubleshooting, you must substitute a combined audio-navigation unit and HDD. Do not substitute the

audio-navigation unit or HDD separately.

If your diagnosis determines that the audio-navigation unit is at fault, the replacement unit does not come with an HDD. Transfer the original HDD

to the new audio- navigation unit. All the client's settings, music, and personal information are transferred with the HDD.

NOTE:

If the HDD is not transferred to the replacement audio-navigation unit, an HDD Access Error appears on the display.

ORDERING A REPLACEMENT HDD

If you need to replace the HDD, it is available through the parts ordering system as a restricted part. You will need the vehicle VIN to complete the

order. The VIN allows the supplier to confirm the current software version being used by the client. When the HDD arrives at the dealership, install

the HDD in the audio- navigation unit, then check any official Honda service website for any patches or updates related to the navigation system.

NOTE:

If the HDD is not transferred to the replacement audio-navigation unit, an HDD Access Error appears on the display.

ORDERING AN ANNUAL HDD UPDATE

To order an update disc for the HDD system, contact the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center. You can also order the update disc online. Go to the website

and select the model and year to find updates. The client's navigation system manual provides additional ordering and installation information. This

information is located in the Client Assistance section.

Follow the instructions included with the update disc on how to load the update information into the navigation system.

ENTERING THE ANTI-THEFT CODE ON AN HDD UNIT

Any time power is disconnected from the navigation unit, the 5-digit anti-theft code must be entered on the navigation system display. This 5-digit

code can be found on a small code card or label in the glove box. Enter the 5-digit code, then select Done.

If the code card is lost or unavailable, you can get the code from the iN (Interactive Network) using the navigation system serial number. The system

serial number can easily be obtained without removing the navigation unit. To get the serial number and the code, do this:

^ Press and hold the MENU, MAP/GUIDE, and CANCEL buttons at the same time.

^ At the Select Diagnosis Items screen, select Detail Information & Settings, select Unit Check, then ECU INFO. The system runs a brief

diagnostic, then the navigation unit serial number is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

^ Use the navigation Anti-theft code inquiry option on the iN to look up the 5-digit navigation anti-theft code. The iN may display more than one

code for a given serial number. This is because serial numbers are not unique. You may have to try more than one 5-digit code if listed.

^ If no code is shown, or the code(s) given do not work, call the American Honda Warranty department. Do not call Tech Line.

When you replace a navigation unit, be sure to remove the old code card, and give the client the new anti-theft security code card.

ANSWERING CLIENT QUESTIONS ABOUT NAVIGATION SYSTEM COVERAGE

Some clients may ask questions regarding a city, address, or POI (point of interest) covered by the navigation system. It is better to verify a coverage

question on an actual vehicle than to disappoint your client by promising coverage that may be incomplete or missing in their area. The following

suggestions can be used to answer coverage inquiries from your client.

^ How do I find the local address of a business that is part of a national chain (for example, Starbucks)?

There are three ways to find the local address to businesses:

- If you know the phone number of the business, select Phone Number and enter the 10-digit phone number (area code plus seven-digit

number).

- Select Name and enter Starbucks. For more common business names, like McDonald's, you may have to search through a list that includes

other businesses like McDonald's Welding, McDonald's Automotive, etc.

- With DVD: Select Category, then Restaurant. Enter the keyword Star. The resulting list includes all restaurants that have the letters Star

anywhere in the name.

NOTE:

This search method may not work on all 2004 and earlier vehicles.

- With HDD: Select Place Category, then Restaurant. Under Sub category, select All Types, then Place Name. Enter keyword Star. The

resulting list includes all restaurants that have the letters Star anywhere in the name.

^ Is my address covered by the navigation system?

Using a current production vehicle (of the same model), try entering the client's address (street first) to see if their area is covered. Always enter

the street first, because sometimes their city may be included in a neighboring township, or under some larger metropolitan city name. If the

address is shown in a later year vehicle but not your client's vehicle, recommend that your client purchase an update.

If the client's address is not in the current database, you can store the client's address as a map input. Refer to Viewing/Saving the current

location in the navigation manual.

^ Is my city covered by the navigation system?

For general questions about whether a city is covered, view the map coverage link on the DVD order site. On the site, you enter a year and

model, and then click on the Coverage link. You then select a state or province, and the cities are listed. Of course, this does not guarantee that

the client's road or address is in the system. Verifying on an actual production vehicle is always the best guarantee that your information is

accurate.

^ The gas station on my corner is now a restaurant. Why is it still incorrect in the navigation system?

For POI-related client questions, explain that businesses are constantly moving, and there can be a considerable lag in updating the millions of

POIs in the system. The database is updated annually, and the best way to verify whether the P01 is accurate is to verify the inquiry on a current

production vehicle.

^ How do I update my Gracenote software?

While this is not a navigation system software, clients may ask questions about it. Refer to the audio section of the applicable owner's manual.

Service Manual Update: Removing the Igniter Harness From the Headlight Housing

BACKGROUND

The headlight housing and the igniter harness are available as separate service parts. If you need to replace the headlight housing, follow the

REPAIR PROCEDURE to transfer the igniter harness to the new housing.

TOOL INFORMATION

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:

This procedure is in an outline form that you can also use as a checklist for the repair. If you need more details, bookmark the following

procedures in the 07-10 DX Service Manual, or view them online:

^ Bulb Replacement

^ Headlight Adjustment

1. Remove the screws, the clips, and the bolts securing the front bumper.

2. Pull on the front bumper at the wheel arch areas to release it from the hooks on the side spacers.

3. With the help of an assistant, pull both sides of the front bumper away from the side spacers, then pull the bumper out to release the hooks from

the corner upper beam.

4. With the help of an assistant, disconnect the fog light connectors, then remove the front bumper.

5. Disconnect the connectors from the headlight housing.

6. Remove the clips and the bolts, then remove the headlight.

7. Remove the corner upper beam from the headlight housing by removing the bolt.

8. Turn the cover 45 degrees counterclockwise to remove it from the headlight housing.

9. Turn the HID socket 45 degrees counterclockwise to remove it from the bulb, and disconnect the 1P connector.

10. Pull the retaining spring away from the bulb, then remove the bulb.

11. Remove the headlight, the front turn signal/front parking light, and the front side marker light from the headlight housing.

12. Remove the igniter harness from the 4P connector in the headlight housing:

NOTE:

To avoid problems during reassembly, note the wire locations in the connector before you remove the wire terminals.

^ On the wire side of the connector, look for a square hole above each wire terminal.

^ Push the special connector tool into the square hole lightly until you feel the resistance increase, then pull out the wire, the terminal, and

the special tool at the same time. Repeat for the other three wires.

13. Tightly wrap the wire terminals and the rubber terminal boot into a bundle with masking tape so it looks like a small egg.

14. Cutoff the ends of a coat hanger, and bend it into the shape below, or make an equivalent tool.

15. To remove the igniter from the headlight housing, push the wire bundle into the headlight housing while guiding it toward the front of the lens.

At the same time, gently pull on the harness from the other side. To avoid snagging the harness, use your finger or the tool you made in step 14,

to keep the harness toward the lens and away from the bracket inside the housing.

NOTE:

If the harness gets stuck, don't try to pull it out. Push the harness back in, then use your finger to push it toward the lens (away from the

bracket), and try again.

16. Tape a piece of heavy string or equivalent that is at about two feet long to the coat hanger.

17. On the new headlight housing, thread the coat hanger into the headlight housing, and move it around until you can grab it and pull it out of the

igniter opening.

18. Separate the string from the coat hanger, then remove the coat hanger.

19. Tape the string to the bundle on the igniter harness.

20. Pull on the string, and push the harness in to guide it through the headlight housing. If the harness gets caught, use your fingers to guide the

harness as high and as close to the lens as possible. Make sure the harness is routed over the bracket as shown.

21. Remove the tape from the wire terminals and the terminal boot, then insert the wire terminals into their correct cavities in the 4P connector

housing.

22. Reinstall the headlight, the front turn signal/front parking light, and the front side marker light into the headlight housing.

23. Reinstall the corner upper beam on the headlight housing.

24. Reinstall the headlight housing.

25. Reconnect all the connectors.

26. Reinstall the bumper:

^ Reconnect the fog light connectors.

^ Make sure the front bumper engages the hooks of both corner upper beams and the side spacers (on each side) securely.

^ Reinstall all the clips, the screws, and the bolts.

^ Replace any damaged clips.

27. Adjust the headlights.

A/T - Shock Or Noise When Engaging

A/T Engagement Shock or Noise? Neutralize the Engine Mounts

To cut down on engine noise and vibration, the subframe and engine mounts isolate the engine and transmission from the passenger compartment. If

any of the subframe mounts or engine mounts are binding, they can increase engagement shock, transmission noise, or engine vibration.

Before you replace an A/T for an engagement shock or noise complaint, test-drive an identical known-good vehicle to make sure the shock or noise

isn't just a normal characteristic. If your service client's vehicle is worse compared to the known-good vehicle, refer to the applicable S/M to

neutralize the engine mounts. If the S/M has no such procedure, then follow these steps instead:

1. Loosen the main engine mounting bolts until they're just finger-tight.

2. Start the engine, and set the parking brake.

3. Apply the brakes, and then shift back and forth between Drive and Reverse several times.

4. Shift to Park, and shut off the engine.

A/T - Whining Noise Information

Whiny A/T? Consider This Before Ordering a Reman

Got a vehicle in your shop for a whiny A/T? Before you go off and order a reman unit, you need to consider a few things first. Our reman center has

found that 30 to 40 percent of the failed A/Ts returned for noise problems turned out being NTF after inspection.

To avoid unnecessary A/T replacement, here are some general front-wheel-drive facts you need to think about as you troubleshoot:

^ Front-wheel-drive vehicles have a transaxle instead of a conventional A/T with a rear differential. The transaxle combines A/T and differential

DIAGNOSIS

1. Close the center console armrest, and pull up on it in the middle without using the release button.

^ If the armrest doesn't open, this service bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal troubleshooting.

^ If the armrest opens, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Move the driver's seat all the way forward, and work from the rear seat.

2. Open the center console armrest.

3. Working from the back to the front, remove the latch hole trim by inserting the trim tool under it, and twisting up on it. Be careful not to scratch

the center console or the latch hole trim.

4. Cut six 5 mm x 10 mm pieces of wool felt.

5. Apply three pieces of wool felt, one on top of the other, above the rear side clip hole. Apply the remaining three pieces of wool felt, one on top

of the other, below the rear side clip hole.

6. Reinstall the latch trim.

7. Remove the three screws from the armrest base.

8. Pull out the armrest base to detach the clips.

9. Remove the two screws that removes the armrest from the armrest hinge.

*10. Trim the retainer as shown, to allow easier installation on the hinge.*

*11. Lay the armrest hinge down. Using needle nose pliers, insert the trimmed retainer into the hinge at the location shown.*

12. Reinstall the armrest to the hinge.

13. Reinstall the armrest base to the armrest.

14. Close the center console armrest, and make sure it latches properly.

DIAGNOSIS

NOTE:

If a disc is damaged by something other than the navigation or compass unit, like rough handling by the client, disc replacement is not covered

by warranty.

1. Eject the disc from the navigation or compass unit.

Refer to the applicable service manual, or online, enter keywords NAVI DVD for location and instructions on ejecting the disc.

2. Check that the disc is the correct color and version for the vehicle. Refer to Service Bulletin 05-018, Navigation System Information and DVD

Information and Inspection, for more information. If the disc is not the correct base version or higher, replace it and retest.

NOTE:

The RL compass model uses a similar looking CD. If you replace it with a DVD, you will see a DVD read error message.

3. Check the read surface of the disc for circular scratches, scuffs, or arcs.

NOTE:

If there is damage on the disc but not circular scratches, scuffs, or arcs, (damage not caused by the navigation unit) you may need to replace

the disc, but not the navigation or compass unit.

Does the disc have circular scratches, scuffs, or arcs?

Yes- Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

No - Do the update procedure in Service Bulletin 07-022, Navigation Software Updates for Daylight Saving Time (DST), DVD Read Error

Message, and Other Listed Symptoms. If the problem still does not go away, suggest to the client that they replace the disc and retest.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Replace the navigation unit or compass unit:

^ Refer to the Navigation section of the appropriate service manual, or

^ Online, under Search by Vehicle, enter keywords NAVI REMOVE and select Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation) from

the list.

NOTE:

Use the RL navigation unit removal instructions to remove the compass unit.

2. Remove the disc. Look at the disc label to identify the version (VER). To order the replacement disc, call, select option 3 for dealerships, then

select option 2 for map patches, and specify that you are replacing a disc for circular scratches. Have the following information ready, and give it

to the ordering clerk to ensure you get the correct disc:

^ The order is for service bulletin 08-035.

^ The VIN.

^ The disc version on the label.

NOTE:

^ For 2007 DVDs with version 4.55 or 4.56, request a replacement DVD with version 4.56A.

^ For 2008 DVDs with version 4.61, 4.62, or 4.63 request a replacement DVD with version 4.63.

^ For 2007-08 RL compass units, use CDs with version 4.54 thru 4.56 only. For 2009-10 RL compass units, use CDs with version 4.63 thru

4.71 only. If you insert the wrong CD, or a navigation DVD, a DVD read error message appears on the display.

^ Make sure you return the damaged disc. Put it in a protective sleeve or jewel case with the faulty navigation or compass unit. If you do

not return the disc with the unit, your account will be debited for the unit.

3. Install the replacement disc into the new unit.

NOTE:

The disc is mailed to your dealership, and the VIN is printed on the mailing label to make sure the disc is installed in the correct vehicle.

4. Do the update procedure in Service Bulletin 07-022, Navigation Software Updates for Daylight Saving Time (DST), DVD Read Error Message,

and Other Listed Symptoms if applicable. Check online, and apply any other navigation patches or software updates for the navigation unit.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Tilt the steering wheel all the way up, and push it all the way in.

2. Slide the driver's seat all the way forward. Carefully pry up on the bottom of the anchor cover to release the hooks and the tab, then remove the

cover by pulling it upward.

3. Remove the lower anchor bolt from the seat belt assembly.

4. Remove the end covers from the back of both seat tracks.

5. Remove the rear mounting bolts.

6. Slide the driver's seat all the way back.

7. Remove the inner and outer seat track end covers.

8. Remove the front mounting bolts.

9. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure, and wait at least 3 minutes before removing the seat.

10. Lift up the driver's seat, then detach the harness clips, and disconnect the side airbag connector, the seat wire harness connector (with seat

heater), and the seat belt buckle tensioner connector.

11. Remove the head restraint.

12. With the help of an assistant, carefully remove the driver's seat through the door opening.

13. Remove the screw, release the hooks and the tab, then remove the lower front cover.

14. Remove the recline cover:

^ Remove the screw, then release the hooks at the back of the cover.

^ Pull up the cover, then release the hooks in the middle of the cover.

^ Disconnect the power seat adjustment switch connector and lumbar support switch connector.

^ Detach the seat recline harness clip from the seat frame.

15. Remove the upper rail outer cover.

16. Remove the driver's seat belt buckle:

^ Remove the center anchor bolt.

^ Disconnect the seat belt buckle switch connector (blue) and the seat belt buckle tensioner connector (yellow).

^ Detach the harness clips.

17. Disconnect the slide motor connector and the harness clip.

18. At the left rear corner of the seat assembly, disconnect the driver's seat wire harness 2P connector from the driver's seat position sensor, and

detach the harness clip.

19. Remove the Torx bolts from each corner of the seat adjuster assembly.

20. Remove the seat adjuster assembly from the seat, then lay the seat adjuster assembly on a clean, flat surface.

21. Remove the cover from the slide motor bracket, and install it on the new seat adjuster assembly (four clips).

22. Remove the right rear seat track end cover from the old seat adjuster assembly, then install it on the new assembly.

23. Loosely install the new seat adjuster assembly on the seat with four new Torx bolts from the kit, then torque the bolts to 15 Nm (11 lb-if).

24. Reconnect the driver's seat wire harness 2P connector to the driver's seat position sensor, then attach the harness clip.

25. Reconnect the slide motor connector, and attach the harness clip.

26. Reinstall the seat belt buckle, and torque the bolt to 32 N.m (24 lb-ft).

27. Reattach the seat belt buckle switch harness clips.

28. Reconnect the seat belt buckle switch connector and the seat belt buckle tensioner connector.

29. Reinstall the upper rail outer cover.

30. Reconnect the power seat adjustment switch connector and the lumbar support switch connector, then attach the harness clip.

31. Reinstall the recline cover.

32. Reinstall the lower front cover.

33. Reinstall the seat inside the vehicle.

34. Reconnect the side airbag connector, the seat wire harness connector, (with seat heater), and the seat belt buckle tensioner connector.

35. Reinstall the driver's seat mounting bolts, and torque them to 35 N.m (26 lb-ft).

36. Reinstall all four seat track end covers.

37. Reinstall the lower anchor bolt, and torque it to 32 N.m (24 lb-ft).

38. Reinstall the anchor cover.

39. Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:

Make sure to use a # 0 Phillips Screwdriver that is in good condition, and apply enough down force when removing the screw to avoid damaging

the screw.

1 Using a # 0 Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw from the key case. Remove the cover and the key transmitter.

2. Follow the Decode and Copy instructions on the Matrix X key cutter to cut a new key with the new key case. This allows you to use the original

key without needing the key code.

3. Assemble the cover and the transmitter onto the new key case, and install the screw.

4. To add a key with the HDS, you need these items:

^ The new master key

^ First password (This five character code is available on the iN.) Go to SERVICE, select Vehicle Information from the left column, then

select Immobilizer Code Inquiry.

NOTE:

Make sure the market, the date, and the time on the HDS setup screen are correct. Select the F12 key in the upper right corner to get the

Set-up Details screen. Make sure Market is set to USA. Select the time display in the lower right corner to get the Date/Time Properties

pop-up window. Make sure the date and time are correct. For details, refer to the HDS Set-up Instructions listed under Tool Information in

ISIS.

5. Connect the HDS to the DLC (data link connector).

6. Insert the client's original key (now without the keyless transmitter) into the ignition switch, and turn the switch to ON (II). Turn on the HDS.

7. At the screen prompts, enter the VIN and the odometer reading, then verify the correct date and time.

8. From the system Selection screen, select IMMOBI.

9. From the Immobilizer Test Mode screen, select Immobilizer Setup.

10. From the Immobilizer Setup screen, select Add and Delete Keys.

11. From the Add and Delete Keys screen, select Add 1 Key.

12. From the Add 1 Key screen, select Begin to Add 1 Key.

NOTE:

If there are six keys already in memory, you'll need to stop and do Delete or Add Multiple Keys, but that requires all of the client's keys.

Any key not present will no longer start the engine.

13. From the first password screen, enter the first password, then follow the screen prompts. When you are finished, turn the ignition switch to

LOCK (0), then turn off and disconnect the HDS.

Brakes - Brake Disc Refinishing Information

Brake Disc Refinishing Guidelines

(Supersedes 00-037, dated October 5, 2006, to revise the information marked by the asterisks)

The requirement to refinish new brake discs was removed.*

American Honda does not allow replacement of brake discs under warranty unless the brake disc is beyond its service limit for refinishing. If the

brake disc is within its service limit, you must refinish it. Maximum refinishing limits may be found in the Conventional Brakes section of the

appropriate service manual.

*Refinish brake discs only when they are scored or out of specification for runout or parallelism. See the appropriate service manual for the

specifications.*

American Honda requires refinishing of the front brake discs with an on-car brake lathe that mounts to the steering knuckle. Use of an on-car,

steering knuckle-mounted lathe is critical because it corrects runout of the hub and disc as an assembly. Experience has shown that very small

amounts of runout, not felt as brake pulsation initially, will grow and become noticeable as discs are subjected to heat and wear over time and

mileage. Two on-car brake lathes are recommended. The Kwik-Lathe, Model Number KWY-108000501, is supported with automatic shipments of

adapters for new models, when required. The Accu-turn On-car Brake Lathe, Model ACCHONOCLPKG, is also recommended.

A power driver is required for the rear wheel drive NSX and is highly recommended for all others. The model number for the Kwik-Lathe power

driver is KWY-108012005; the Accu-turn lathe includes a power driver. Here are some advantages of using power drivers:

^ The disc is rotated at the optimum speed for a smooth and consistent cut.

^ There is no need to climb in and out of the vehicle to start and stop the engine, or shift the transmission.

^ Securing the opposite wheel with a tie-down strap is not required.

^ There is no waiting for the engine to return to idle and no concern about engine speed changes that can adversely affect brake disc cut and finish.

^ The Traction Control System (TCS) or Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is not involved.

^ Consistent cutting speed increases cutting tool life.

FRONT BRAKE DISCS

The following guidelines show the Kwik-Way lathe setup, the Accu-turn lathe setup is similar.

Setting Up the Vehicle

Put the transmission in Neutral. If you are not using the power drive system, start the engine, and let it warm up to its normal operating temperature

so the idle speed will stabilize to its lowest rpm.

NOTE:

MDX, RDX and all 4WD vehicles must have all four wheels off of the shop floor.

Raise the vehicle on a lift.

Check for loose wheel bearings. You must replace loose wheel bearings before you refinish the brake discs. If you do not, the brake lathe will not

correct for brake disc runout, resulting in an uneven finish and brake pulsation.

Remove the front wheels, then reinstall the wheel nuts with flat washers to compensate for the removed wheel. Torque the wheel nuts to the required

specification (see the appropriate service manual).

Remove the caliper assembly. Use a wire or a S-hook to hold the caliper to the spring or damper tower. Do not kink the brake hose or use it to

support the caliper. If you are not using the power drive system and the vehicle has TCS or VSA, make sure you install a brake pad spreader between

the pads on the hanging caliper. Also, make sure the system is turned off anytime the engine is started. If the system is not turned off, the brakes may

activate, causing the brake pads on the hanging caliper to hit each other or the caliper pistons to fall out.

Install the vibration damper on the brake disc. If you are not using the power drive system, make sure you install the protective band around the

wheel nuts.

If you are not using the power drive system, use a fabric tie-down strap to secure the brake disc that is opposite to the one you are refinishing. If you

are working on an Integra Type-R, do not use a tie-down strap; let both front wheels turn freely.

Mounting the Brake Lathe

Remove the tool bed from the brake lathe, then mount the brake lathe to the steering knuckle with an Acura 1-piece speed mount. These mounts

provide quicker, more accurate mounting, and can be ordered through the Acura Tool and Equipment Program (see ORDERING INFORMATION).

Attaching the Power Drive System

1. Make sure the drive motor assembly on the power drive system is level with the brake disc.

2. Attach the mounting yoke to the brake disc, and secure it with one of the wheel nuts. Torque the wheel nut to the required specification (see the

appropriate service manual).

3. Attach the driveshaft on the drive motor assembly to the mounting yoke, making sure the center line of the driveshaft is level with the spindle nut

on the wheel hub.

4. Set the lower toggle switch on the drive motor assembly to FWD (counterclockwise rotation) or REV (clockwise rotation).

Setting Up and Adjusting the Brake Lathe

Use Kwik-Way cutting bits, P/N KWY-109109223, and the holding screws that come with them. These bits are stamped KW and are available

through the Acura Tool and Equipment Program (see ORDERING INFORMATION).

Before you use the brake lathe, inspect the tips of the cutting bits with a magnifying glass to make sure the tips are not worn out. Each bit has three

tips. If a tip is worn, rotate the bit, and use a new tip. A worn tip produces a poor finish and may cause chattering.

Reinstall the tool bed on the brake lathe with the top of the cutting bits facing up and the feed knobs facing down. Adjust the tool bed until the brake

disc is centered between the cutting bits. For proper refinishing, the brake disc must turn toward the top of the cutting bits.

Do not set the cutting depth on the brake lathe to more than 0.2 mm (0.008 in.) This is two divisions on the cutting knob. Make sure you start your

cut at least 3 mm (0.12 in.) beyond the worn area on the brake disc.

If you are cutting a larger diameter brake disc such as that used on MDXs and 1986-90 Legends, make sure you use the 150 cutting bit holders.

These bit holders available through the Acura Tool and Equipment Program (see ORDERING INFORMATION), supersede the original bit holders

and provide better cutting coverage for larger diameter brake discs. Each bit holder is clearly marked for proper installation on the tool holder.

Cutting the Brake Disc

To get the smoothest cut and the best brake disc finish, always use the slowest feed speed on the tool bed feed motor. Place the drive belt on the

smallest pulley of the feed motor and on the largest pulley of the hand wheel.

Make sure the lower toggle switch on the power drive system drive motor assembly is set to the proper rotation to turn the brake disc toward the top

of the cutting bits. Plug the tool bed feed motor into the power outlet on the drive motor assembly, then turn on the drive motor with the upper toggle

switch on the assembly.

If you are not using the power drive system, make sure the transmission is in 1st gear or Reverse (2nd gear on Integra Type-Rs) and the engine is

idling, but not at a fast idle. If the transmission and engine are at higher gears and speeds, you will damage the cutting bits.

Turn on the tool bed feed motor, and snap it into place; there should be tension on the feed belt. Cut the brake disc until the cutting bits clear the

outer edge of the disc. The cutting bits should produce a smooth, consistent finish with no chatter marks or grooves.

If the disc did not clean up entirely on the first pass, reset the brake lathe and make a second pass.

Finishing the Job

Remove the vibration damper and the protective band (if used). Use a micrometer to measure the thickness of the brake disc. Make sure the

thickness is within the service manual specifications. Clean the brake disc with soapy water or brake cleaner, then wipe it dry. Use a vacuum cleaner

to remove any dust or chips, but do not use compressed air.

Unplug the tool bed feed motor from the drive motor assembly, and remove the mounting yoke from the brake disc. Remove the speed mount from

the steering knuckle.

Apply a small amount of Molykote 77 grease to the brake pad shims. Reinstall the caliper assembly. (If you did not use the power drive system, use

the brake pad spreader to push the pistons back into the caliper.) Torque the nuts and bolts to the required specification (see the appropriate service

manual).

Refinish the other front brake disc using the same guidelines.

Check the brake fluid level, then test-drive the vehicle to make sure the brake pedal is firm and does not pulsate. Lightly apply the brakes about 20

times during the test-drive to seat the brake pads.

REAR BRAKE DISCS

It is possible to use an on-car lathe on some models if the rear caliper mounts are low enough to allow the lathe to clear the vehicle body. A power

driver is needed for front wheel drive models. Refinish rear brake discs on bench mounted equipment if necessary.

Follow the same guidelines you used for refinishing front brake discs, noting these differences:

^ MDX: If you are not using the power drive system, make sure the transmission is in low gear and the VTM-4 LOCK switch is on (the light in the

switch is lit).

^ All others: Mount the brake lathe to the rear knuckle with the Acura 2-Piece Adapter (P/N KWY-108102504). You can order the 2-piece adapter
